Blxckie fans encourage rapper to release Gospel song after images of him in ‘Sunday wear’

Gospel singer Betusile Mcinga’s winning of Song of the Year at this past weekend’s Metro FM Music Awards for his song Ngena Noah might have just inspired Blxckie to also try his luck with a Gospel ditty.

[A]bout to drop the hardest gospel song,” the rapper said to his fans on Twitter.

Ngena Noah beat K.O’s Sete, which Blxckie is featured on, to the Song of the Year on Saturday night. The other songs that were nominated included AKA and Nasty C’s Lemons (Lemonade), Konke and Musa Keys’ Kancane, Fatela by Aymos and Big Nuz’s Ngeke among the long list of hits.

As expected Blxckie’s fans were stoked to hear that the rapper, whose real name is Sihle Sithole, is about to release a Gospel song, with some suggesting what he should title the song.

Some of the 23-year-old rapper’s fans took it a step further, grabbing the images Blxckie posted and turning them into album art, with an album title and a whole track list.

One netizen seemed supportive, but was cautious to warn Blxckie not to work with certain Gospel artists.

Together with Afrikaans music and Maskandi, Gospel has been one of South Africa’s most selling music genres in the past. Amapiano has seen consistent growth, with Spotify reporting that the genre was last year’s most streamed on the music platform.

But Gospel’s loyal following is still palpable as shown with the Song of the Year at the Metro FM awards going to a Gospel artist. South African artist from other genres have also dabbled in the religious genre. Kabelo Mabalane did his own version of Jeso Fela in 2011, while Samthing Soweto worked with the Soweto Central Chorus choir to perform Bawo and Jub-Jub famously did his version of the same song, Ndikhokhele.
