Emmy Awards recap: Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ takes the crown

Netflix was the big winner at Sunday's Emmy Awards with 'The Crown' and 'The Queen's Gambit' winning an overall 44 awards.

The television academy loves the royal family-based TV drama The Crown so much that they saw it fit to award the show a whopping 24 awards at this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony.

The amount of nominations that The Crown received saw the show tied with Disney+ original The Mandalorian.

The 24 awards were won in addition to three Emmys secured by the show at the creative arts ceremony held on 12 September.

Michaela Coel makes history

British actress, screenwriter, director, producer and singer Michaela Coel (real name Michaela Ewuraba Boakye-Collinson) made history as the first Black woman to win an Emmy for limited series writing for her 2020 show I May Destroy You.

According to AFP, Coel, who penned I May Destroy You about the aftermath of a rape, dedicated her writing award to “every single survivor of sexual assault”.

Following her win, she received an immense show of support from fellow nominees comedian Trevor Noah and Olivia Colman of The Crown.
