Donald replaces RJ Benjanim as Idols mentor

Stepping in to replace award-winning vocalist, songwriter, composer, vocal coach, musical director and producer RJ Benjamin is Donald Moatshe, who joins Idols SA’s 13th season as music mentor.

Metro FM DJ, Sama award winnner and platinum-selling artist Moatshe recently made news for his release of a visual album, Something More, as well as his debut on the reality show as a guest judge for the Cape Town auditions.

“I was chosen as one of the guest judges for season 13 and I went through to help find the best talent in the city. It was a great experience for me. Being at the table with Randall, Unathi and Somizi was a dream come true as I am a fan of the show and I got to see how it is run off-camera,” he said.

“Having been part of the team earlier, I think I impressed them so much so that they thought my expertise would be of importance to the season and I can contribute positively to finding our next idol.”

Speaking about the decision to bring Moatshe on board, the show’s executive producer, Gavin Wratten, said: “Donald is replacing RJ Benjamin, who has been part of the show for years and done an excellent job.

“However, we thought it was time to bring in a new face and perspective to the contest.

“Considering how much Donald has achieved in his career over the years, it seemed fitting that he be next.” Wratten explained what Moatshe’s contribution to the show will entail.

“There is a whole music team which puts together all the songs that the contestants choose for their live performances.

“Donald is going to encourage and coach the contestants on how best to execute the song from a performance point of view, as well as rectify mistakes.

“Mentorship is everything in any profession. In music, because there are so many layers and history, it is important for the new artists to understand the business of things.”

Moatshe is excited about his new role. “Having a mentor from a musical point of view is something every artist wishes for, simply because it helps accelerate things.”
