Thato Sikwane, professionally known as DJ Fresh, has denied reports claiming he would be moving to Kaya FM following his suspension from Metro FM for using the word “m*unery” on air in May.
Kaya FM managing director Greg Maloka shared a picture of him and DJ Fresh holding pens, with papers on the table, while attending the Southern African music Conference on Friday and wrote: “Caption This!!! #afropolitan.”
The picture and request for a caption led to speculation that the DJ may have found a new home at Kaya FM.
But DJ Fresh said it was not the case. He said the two were merely ordering lunch at the event, and not signing contracts.
“Guys, who is making these revelations? We were merely ordering lunch this past Friday,” said DJ Fresh.
The DJ was taken to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission (BCCSA) for also telling a listener to stop “tweeting out of his a**” in May and he hasn’t returned since, leaving his fans calling for a boycott of the station. Following his suspension, there were claims that DJ Fresh had refused to apologise for his comments, an allegation he denied.
In a statement on Monday, DJ Fresh said: “A scheduled meeting between Fresh and the SABC occurred when the two weeks lapse and Fresh agreed to apologise unreservedly. The impasse between DJ fresh and the SABC transpired when the national broadcaster requested that in addition to the two weeks Fresh was off air, the public apology he agreed to do, he must remain off air for an additional three weeks and will restart work on Monday 15 July 2019. As of the date of publishing, Fresh is still awaiting confirmation on his return to work on Monday.”
The SABC has since terminated his contract.
