Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts dies

TV icon and Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts has passed away.

The 74-year-old renowned journalist and TV presenter reportedly succumbed to cancer this morning, 22 August.

Actor Zola Hashatsi confirmed the news on Twitter, saying an official statement will be shared shortly.

“A sad day in broadcasting it is as @DerekWatts unfortunately lost the battle with cancer. The full statement will be released shortly. Please give family space and time to process. #RIPDerekWatts we shall continue to fly the media and journalism flag high. One love.”

Tributes have since poured in for the TV star on social media.

Derek Watts hospitalisation

A few weeks ago, Carte Blanche said that it was hopeful about Derek’s recovery.

The veteran TV host had been with the show since its inception in 1988. Carte Blanche executive producer, John Webb, said Derek took enormous comfort from the messages he received during his recovery from sepsis.

“Following his cancer diagnosis, I know his resolve will be strengthened by the continued love and support of the people to whom he dedicated his working life. We join all of you in wishing strength and recovery to our patriarch, mentor, colleague, and friend.”

In a statement confirming his passing, the investigative TV programme said Derek will forever hold a special place in the hearts of many.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Carte Blanche anchor and icon, Derek Watts. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning surrounded by loved ones.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and children in this time of loss. He will forever hold a special place in the hearts and minds of his #CarteBlanche family.”
