Following the arrest of potential suspects in the murder of rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and the public speculation fueled by the Hollywood-style coverage of the arrest, his family has issued a statement registering their concern.
This is the second time that the family has had to implore the rapper’s fan base, known collectively as ‘The Megacy’ to “mourn respectfully”.
The family opened their statement – shared on Lynn Forbes’ Instagram account – by expressing their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the fans as they continue to mourn their loss.
“We have seen people deeply hurt and angered by Kiernan’s murder and wanting justice. As a family, we empathise with the grief experienced and we understand your pain.”
“We are aware of the growing public discontent related to the progress which has been made in the investigation. However, as a family, we are deeply concerned that irresponsible actions, accusations and assumptions may cause more harm than good,” read part of the statement.

They further called on AKA’s fans to give the police space to do their job while continuing to celebrate his life and preserve his memory.
The family concluded their statement by slamming any posts or information that they are requesting donations.
“We have not opened any donation accounts or requested investments.”
The rapper was murdered in early February at Wish Restaurant in Durban’s popular Florida Road.
CCTV footage later emerged showing a gunman accosting AKA as he was preparing to leave and shot him at close range.
It has since been reported that another gunman was at the scene as it is believed that his bullet struck AKA’s friend and former manager Tebello Tibz Motsoane, who died from his injuries at the scene.
Although initial reports stated that five men had been arrested in connection with the murder, the South African Police Services (Saps) has dismissed claims that, that many people had been arrested.
On Monday, a Netwerk24 report asserted that three men were initially arrested at the Erica Square shopping centre in Belhar on Sunday.
Two more men were then apprehended in another part of Belhar.
Speaking to The Citizen, KZN spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said unconfirmed reports about the arrest of “an ever-changing number of suspects have been doing the rounds and are misleading the public” and said police are appealing for space and time to investigate AKA’s murder, echoing the statement issued by AKA’s family.
