African supermodel in SA for fashion week

Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek will be walking the runway at Mercedes-Benz Africa Fashion Week in Pretoria next week.

Wek, who was discovered in London in 1995, is known for her work with for Issey Miyake, Moschino and Victoria’s Secret.

She has also walked the runway for high-profile fashion designers John Galliano, Chanel, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein.

Africa Fashion International, the event’s organiser confirmed that Wek will be a guest at Saturday’s show and she would also be a judge for the AFI Fashion Awards.

According to City Press, Wek will have a front row seat when she isn’t modelling creations from designers including Angelina Masike, Wetive Nkosi and Khothatso Tsotetsi.

“It would be nice for the young designers to know that an international supermodel wore their clothes,” said AFI spokesperson Nicholas Maweni.

“The African connection was important to us. We didn’t want anyone who would create controversy. Alek is an African model who … is inspirational,” added Maweni.

Africa Fashion Week began yesterday. It will move to Pretoria from Wednesday until Saturday before returning to Johannesburg for the awards on Sunday night.
