Actor ‘Babes’ Mphatseng dies while going to hospital

A memorial service will be held for TV, radio and stage actor Modisa Gaorekwe "Babes" Mphatseng at the Civic Theatre this afternoon.


Mphatseng (52), who was best known as Phineas on the SABC2 sitcom Moferefere Lenyalong, died on Sunday while on his way to hospital.

Family spokesperson Ayanda Roda reportedly said Mphatseng complained of flu-like symptoms when he was taken to hospital on Sunday. He died before arriving at the hospital.

Mphatseng, who lived in Rocklands, Bloemfontein, is survived by his wife and four children.

Social media continues to be flooded with condolences for Mphatseng’s family and friends.

Ntokozo Mabunda said on Instagram: “Still in shock about Babes Mphatseng passing. May your soul rest in peace. It was a pleasure meeting and working with you. There was never a dull moment with you around. My prayers go to your family. You will be missed; the industry has lost such a talented man. Thank you for sharing it with us.”

Andrew Seatlholo said on Twitter: “Condolesense to the Mphatseng family and may Bra Babes Mphatseng soul rest in peace.”

Mphatseng will be laid to rest on Saturday after a funeral service at the Kagisanong Hall in Bloemfontein.
