Davido shares banking details on Twitter, supporters send him over R5 million

Ask and you will receive. Davido's supporters sent him over R5 million after he asked for it on social media.

Nigerian superstar Davido just proved artists would be nothing without their fans after he asked for money from them by putting his banking details on Twitter.

The afrobeats singer posted to over nine million of his followers on Twitter, saying if his fans have enjoyed his music over the years, they should to send him money.

He posted that his goal was to be sent 100 million naira. Within 10 minutes, he had already received seven million nairas (roughly R262,918,00).

Davido’s supporters kept showing him love as the donations reached nearly 150 million nairas, approximately R5.6 million.

Davido joked that he needed the money to buy a new Rolls-Royce. He’s still asking people to send him money, with no end in sight.

A familiar face that supported Davido’s goal to get 100 million was SA rapper Focalistic who sent 1 million naira (R37,626).

Davido has previously supported political causes in Nigeria. During the police brutality protests at the hands of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in October 2020, which led to the deaths of 12 protestors in Lagos, his song become an anthem during the #EndSARS protest.

Davido was the second Nigerian artist to release music in response, Fem – on the album A Better Time – became an anthem for #EndSARS protests.

Davido said in an interview on Apple Music’s Africa Now Radio: “I didn’t see this coming, and then I dropped it, and then three weeks later, everybody singing it, everybody [at the] protest.”

It is also important for the artist to bridge African music and have international collaborations.

“I always let them know the bigger picture of things. Forget the music. We’re bridging Africa, Africa-America. What we’re doing is way bigger than the music,” he said.
