Avengers: Endgame is poised to break the record for top grossing movie of all time. The latest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already sunk James Cameron’s Titanic after dominating its opening weekend. In just 11 days in theatres, the Disney and Marvel Studios film has netted almost $2.2 billion in worldwide ticket sales. To put this in context, it took the current number one Avatar 47 days to break the $2 billion mark back in 2009.
During its run, Avatar earned $2.78 billion, but at Avengers: Endgame‘s current rate, analysts are predicting that Endgame could surpass $3 billion at the global box office.
In reality, though there is a lot that still needs to be done for the Avenger’s movie to become the most successful of all time. According to DW.com there are 38 movies that did better if the price of a ticket at the time is taken into account.
The site reports: “Gone with the Wind (1939) was a singular feat unlikely to ever be duplicated — the biggest movie in the world, then and now. In the first few years after its release, the movie sold more than 60 million tickets, equivalent to roughly half the United States population at the time. Today it’s estimated to have sold over 200 million individual tickets, almost triple Endgame’s current estimated ticket total (about 70 million).”
Back when Gone with the Wind came out, the average price of a movie ticket in the US was just 23 cents compared with its current price of $9.
According to DW the top ten most successful films of all time are:
1 Gone with the Wind
2 Star Wars
3 The Sound of Music
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
5 Titanic
6 The Ten Commandments
7 Jaws
8 Doctor Zhivago
9 The Exorcist
10 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
