The Lego Movie is a winner on all counts

There may be some viewers who don’t know about the product around which the project is based, but there won’t be any problems there, as that will mean missing only a handful of references in what is otherwise a stylised but conventional animated film (in contemporary terms).

Will Ferrell is the voice of Lord Business, The Lego Movie’s villain.

The story follows Emmett (Benjamin Pratt), a strictly by-the-book drone who does what he’s told to do, without exception. The simultaneous arrival of a beautiful stranger named Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and Emmett becoming aware of a plot by the evil President Business (Will Ferrell) to force his entire constituency into unbending uniformity change Emmett’s life completely, and he is caught up in a revolution designed to overthrow Business and his henchmen.

Elizabeth Banks is the voice of The Lego Movie heroine Wyldstyle.

The script is written to appeal to adults as much as kids, and there’s plenty of very dry wit and cleverly observed sarcasm. The Lego Movie is one big gimmick, but it’s a brilliantly realised one, and the spin-offs will be a lot more fun than the Cars junk you’re still trying to throw away…
