AKA to rap for the US’s Independence Day

When you choose a Twitter handle like @akaworldwide you’re clearly setting yourself up for success. This past weekend, AKA might have been the only African artist to perform at the BET Experience event, where he performed on the main stage that featured the likes of Snoop Dogg, Nick Cannon and Rae Sremmurd – but its the aftermath that’s really the important story. The South African will now be performing in New York on July 4, the all-important Independence Day in the US, which will just be a taster for his upcoming US tour. AKA is set to tour through America later this year.

The venue, Everyday People, has become a mega New York hangout, largely catering to black urbanites in the Big Apple, so AKA’s inclusion for the venue’s 4th of July celebrations comes as no suprise. The event is being marketed as the Everyday Afrique party.

The Facebook page for the event reads: “Featuring all the newest African sounds, wickedest Caribbean vibes and the freshest tunes from the diaspora as a whole. Expect Naija, Dancehall, Soca, Kwaito, Kuduro, Favela Funk and more. Additionally we have a special live performance by South Africa’s #1 rap artist AKA.”

Supa Mega is already confirmed as one of the headlining acts at this year’s s Rocking The Daisies festival.

AKA’s single One Time is also still on the playlist of BBC 1 Xtra in the UK as well as on high rotation on radio stations across Africa and locally. With One Time, AKA shows his versatility as a musician to be able to compete on a global platform and being the only African based artist featured earlier this year on the coveted BBC Radio 1Xtra’s HOT FOR 2016 list.

As a prolific, and often contraverisal, member of the South African Twitterati, you can rest assured that Twitter will break once AKA announces tour dates in the US.
