AKA ‘sulked’ over Black Coffee

According to a report, the rapper stormed off at the Durban July because Coffee took to the stage before he could.

Tabloid paper Sunday Sun has reported on rumours from last weekend that popular rapper AKA allegedly refused to perform at DJ Tira’s marquee at the Durban July because Black Coffee went on stage before him.

The tabloid said it had heard from “sources who had witnessed the incident” that AKA – who has openly admitted that he and Black Coffee don’t get along – was “furious” that Coffee was allowed to perform ahead of him because he had “waited a long time”.

The sources said AKA was “seriously angry” when Black Coffee took to the stage and he and his entourage “left without saying a word”.

One source said he thought AKA was a “sulky child” because he had not communicated with Tira before leaving and there may have been a good reason for letting Coffee perform first. Black Coffee’s manager told the tabloid that he had been scheduled to perform at 6pm and they weren’t aware of any waiting list.

AKA did end up performing at the afterparty.

AKA told the paper, when asked for comment, that he had merely been rushing to get to another gig and referred queries to DJ Tira.

Black Coffee became the first South African to win a BET Award in the Best International Act – Africa category, which AKA had also been nominated for. Last month, shortly after the award was announced, AKA conceded that although Coffee was not his friend, he deserved respect for his accomplishments. However, AKA had reportedly refused to go on stage to congratulate Coffee in Los Angeles and the hashtag #AKAwinanga duly started trending again on Twitter.

In August last year the two had a Twitter spat in which AKA told Black Coffee to mind his own business and not tell hip-hop musicians anything about the genre because it wasn’t his area of expertise.
