Picth Perfect 2 movie review

Beca (Anna Kendrick) reunites with her fellow Barden Bellas for another series of exceptional a cappella mash-ups. While the music is the primary attraction for the most part, the film has a unique sense of wit that leaves its audience members questioning “Did she really just say what I think she said?” In most cases, yes – and denying yourself the opportunity to laugh out loud would be a sin. As the Bellas would say: “A-ca-believe-it!

Since the first film was a novelty I cannot refute the second one is equally as charming and worthy of praise. Following an incident involving Fat Amy and a wardrobe malfunction at the Lincoln Center, the Barden Bellas are suspended from performing. Determined to regain their status and right to perform they enter a worldwide competition that no American group has ever won before.

There are some new additions to the Bellas but most significant is Hailee Steinfeld who plays the role of Emily Junk, the daughter of a former Bella. She adds a new dynamic to the team, introducing original music to the script – but her presence doesn’t overthrow the equally beautiful and talented Anna Kendrick, who still reigns supreme. Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) is, of course, still the film’s main drawcard and she once again delivers a masterful performance that will lay out her career path for years to come.

While a lot of their shenanigans may appear over the top, it is exactly what makes this film a true gem – you cannot help but laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

The film follows a similar pattern to the first one – the scene sequences almost identical as if not wanting to stray too far from its predecessor. While such reservations may get under the skin of critics, it doesn’t detract from the film in any way.

My concern, however, is not in the film’s ability to make people laugh, but the pretence behind the girls bitchiness set to rub off on our younger generations. Maybe a cleverly concealed life lesson could have been imparted here.

The film also features a number of well-known cameo roles, including the American president and his wife: Snoop Dogg, along with YouTube sensation Pentatonix.

Rumour has it there’s a third movie on its way, but only time will tell. Personally, I believe you shouldn’t ruin a good thing. They got it right once, twice, but a third time? Maybe not.
