Take a #CakeBossSelfie and you could meet Buddy

Send us a photo of yourself with your version of Buddy Valastro’s Spikey Layer Cake (recipe below), and we’ll let him decide if you have what it takes.

If we pick your Cake Boss Selfie, you’ll get to meet the man himself at The Good Food and Wine Show.

Pictures can be sent to online@citizen.co.za, tweet to @TheCitizen_News with the hashtag #CakeBossSelfie. You can also upload your selfies on our Facebook page with the same hashtag.

The top three will get to meet the Cake Boss himself on August 2. Competition closes mid-day 31 July.

You’ll need to bring your cake along so that he can judge which one is best. The winner will receive a copy of one of Buddy Valastro’s cookbooks.

Spikey Layer Cake Recipe

Ingredients

Two 22cm vanilla cakes of your choosing

A total of 8 cups Decorator’s Buttercream (made into 4 colours, 3½ cups pink, 1½ cups each of yellow, blue, and orange)

25 – 30cm cardboard circle

Piping bag fitted with number 6 plain tip

Turntable/Lazy Susan

Directions

1. Use a serrated knife to trim the crusty top off the cake
2. Set the cardboard circle on your turntable, set a dab of pink frosting in the center, and set a cake on top (The frosting will hold the cake in place.)
3. Use a cake spatula to top the cake with pink frosting
4. Set the other cake on top
5. Use the cake spatula to spread the four different color frostings onto the top and sides of the cake, assigning one color to each quarter of the cake
6. Spread and smooth the colours as you turn the table, but do not overmix; you want the colors to streak but not come together into a single blended colour
7. Make the frosting spiky by continuing to turn the turntable and lightly spanking the frosting with the spatula’s blade on the sides and top
8. Use a rubber spatula to carefully add the frostings to the pastry bag, keeping the colours separate by rotating the bag slightly as you add each color and not pressing them together so they will create stripes when piped.
9. Squeeze and pull blobs of multicoloured frosting as you rotate the turntable. With the turntable still, pipe swirly blobs on top of the cake
