“The country has lost one of the experienced, dedicated and talented entertainers of our times. His contribution in the entertainment industry especially theatre and film cannot go unnoticed,” Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile said in a statement.
Chabeli, who performed in productions such as The Wild, Zero Tolerance and Mopheme, will possibly best be remembered for his role as ‘Richard’ the obedient and humble husband in Mponeng.
“On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, we extend our heartfelt condolences to family, friends, and the arts fraternity. We also join them in their mourning because it is also our loss,” added Maile.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also shared its sadness at the news. In a statement on it’s website, the EFF said, “Ntate Chabeli, a Lesotho born citizen of South Africa… a hardworking man and a beacon of the Arts in the dark ages of Apartheid. Ntate Chabeli was a torch light for many young artists who saw the country through a period of transition.”
