“Production constraints and parts shortages severely derailed our launch plans, but we are excited to finally extend the performance range in South Africa with the introduction of the new Golf 8 R. The Golf 8 R joins the Golf GTI and the Tiguan R as Volkswagen’s performance derivatives in the South African market,” says Volkswagen Passenger Cars head Steffen Knapp.
The 8R holds the title of the most powerful R-badge Golf ever as the EA 888 engine so generously endows the five-door-hatch with an output of 235kW and 400N.m, which makes it the most powerful production series Golf incarnation ever. Additionally, the all-wheel-drive drivetrain assists in the 8 R’s 4.8 second 0 to 100km/h sprint time.
Volkswagen limits the hot hatch’s top speed to 250km/h while this can be lifted to 270km/h as part of the Black Performance Package.
Alongside the athletic powertrain is a slew of creature comfort and modern amenities that have tamed its rowdy road-racer characteristics to allow for a greater daily driving experience.
As standard, the Golf 8 R features amenities ranging from inductive charging, a panoramic sunroof, and keyless entry. As for hardware aiding in the 8 R’s driving performance, Volkswagen has introduced features such as Adaptive Chassis Control which includes a drive profile selection feature.
Optional features include IQ. Light Led Matrix headlights, Akrapovič R Performance exhaust, Heads-Up Display, Harman Kardon sound system, Parallel Park Assist, Rear Assist with a rearview camera, and blind spot monitor, to name a few.
Volkswagen offers a three-year/120 000km warranty, a five-year/100 000 km EasyDrive Maintenance Plan and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty as standard. The Volkswagen Golf 8 R will be available across South African dealerships from the end of April.
