Think before you buy
Buying a second-hand car can be a nerve-wracking experience and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Here are some tips from Park Village Auctions for buying cars on auction.
– Ask for a car’s service history. If it is missing, think carefully about bidding unless you are familiar with cars and are certain any problems you come across can be fixed
– Blown turbo chargers, snapped timing chains and smoking engines are all signs that an oil change has been delayed or the wrong oil has been used
– Check all the systems such as ABS and stability control. Make sure all the associated lights turn on when you start the ignition and go out when you start the engine. Check the handbook if you’re not sure you’ve seen all the relevant indicator lights
– After PVA’s assistants start the engine, listen carefully for the first few seconds. Any knocks or rattles are generally not a good sign
– Grey exhaust smoke is a sign of a worn engine
– Ask about the suspension. Did the car rattle while being driven to the auction floor?
– The engine should never stall as the car stops and the revs shouldn’t drop very low and then pick up to the right idle speed
If you’re not confident, bring a knowledgeable friend or a reliable mechanic who can point out the pros and cons of the car you’re interested in. If you have any concerns, go with your gut and move on to the next car.
