New date for heritage auction

A collection of well over 20 items, including everything from old butter vats to bayonets, an executioner's walking stick and a rare rifle with a 303-barrel running alongside a 12-gauge shotgun barrel, will be offered for sale at Consolidated Auction Group's heritage sale on December 1.

“Last week we reported that our artifact auction will be held on November 23, on the same day that the historic Victory Theatre in Orange Grove comes up for sale. Having the two auctions on the same day would’ve made for a great heritage double bill, but we’ve had no other alternative other than postponing the artifact auction,” says Chico da Silva, managing member of Consolidated and custodian of Heritage Watch, the company’s preservation project for historic collectables.

Da Silva stresses that the sizeable collection is one of the reasons why the auction, the first of its kind in South Africa’s history, necessitated more administration time.

Apart from the items mentioned, the collection also includes a San bow and arrow, given to the collector by his brother who was a big game hunter.

The hunter was presented with the bow and arrow after he nursed his San tracker back to health, the highest symbol of gratitude that a San hunter and tracker can bestow on anyone.

Next to an old gramophone, replete with that old-sound look and a couple of Brunswick panatrope records, all neatly stacked away in a special fold-out, leather-covered compartment; the items certainly take one’s imagination away to a bygone era, one authentically African and the other illustrative of early European sophistication.

Considering the value of some of the items, Consolidated will sell the items by catalogue during the auction where many other artifacts will be on display.

Inquiries into the artifact auction on December 1 can be phoned through to 082-564-7051 or 011-022-4133, and emails can be sent to info@heritagewatch.co.za

In the meantime, bidders are requested to take note of the following auctions which will be held before then:

  • Complete closing-down sale of a 31-year landmark building supplies business in Ladysmith on November 20 at 30 Queen Street.
  • Complete liquidation disposal of engineering machinery and equipment on November 21 at he corner of Bezuidenhout and Roussouw Street in Wadeville.
  •  Game farm with a cash crop on November 22 on the farm Buffelsfontein in Mookgopong (Naboomspruit).
