Ndabeni-Abrahams commits to support newly appointed Post Office CEO

Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams on Monday said she would support the newly appointed CEO of the South African Post Office, Nomkhita Mona.

The Cabinet last week announced Mona’s appointment to the position for a five-year term after it had been vacant since 2019.

“She will play a leading role in making sure that the Post Office continues its turnaround momentum and to render an impeccable service to South Africans. As the shareholder, we will give Mona every support she needs in order for her to succeed, ” Ndabeni-Abrahams said in a statement.

Mona has a wealth of experience in both the private and public sectors. She has more than 15 years experience at an executive level.

Ndabeni-Abrahams said the Post Office was a key stakeholder in delivering on the government’s developmental objectives of improving access to basic services in previously underserved communities.

“Its network is the largest point of presence nationally and is able to connect government, businesses and citizens anywhere in South Africa. Mona’s appointment comes at a time when the Post Office is faced with financial challenges that have continued from the 2018-19 financial year amid a constrained fiscus. She takes on the responsibility of stabilising the Post Office. I have no doubt that she will be equal to the task”, she said.

Ministerial spokesperson Mish Molakeng said the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic had hurt the Post Office’s revenues and the entity had implemented long-term initiatives to diversify its income streams.

“These have started to show results, and the Post Office has also identified quick solutions that will improve its income in the short term,” Molakeng said.
