Lots of artsy lots coming up
Monday will see 150 lots of South African art, together with estate jewellery and silver up for auction at Bernardi's in Pretoria.
BURST OF COLOUR. ‘Gebarste Granaat’ by Johannes Meintjes. Pictures: Supplied.
Included in the old master paintings is a rare portrait, My Gardener, by Frans Oerder.
The artwork was once owned by Cyril Behrmann, a Johannesburg pioneer in shopping centre development. The painting was exhibited at the Johannesburg Art gallery in 1980 – 1981 at the Friends of the Johannesburg Art Gallery Exhibition.
An iconic oil by Johannes Meintjes, Gebarste Granaat, Gregoire Boonzaier’s colourful and wintery genial oil of Fishermen’s Houses and Windcharger, Waenhuiskrans, Pranas Domsaitis’s Portrait of a Coloured Girl II, Irmin Henkel’s Double Portrait and Ephraim Ngatane’s Figures Around the Fire are a few of the works that shine among the myriad of other art on offer – with the likes of Walter Battiss, Errol Boyley, Carl Buchner, Christo Coetzee, Erich Mayer, JH Pierneef, Nicolaas Maritz, Walter Meyer, Fred Schimmell, Alfred Thoba and Rudolph Vosser complementing the sale.
A small collection of estate jewellery, featuring a Victorian gold charm bracelet, a pair of ZAR “Half-pond” cufflinks, pocket watches, a silver Football Trophy and silver hollow-ware will start the auction at 4pm with the art continuing at 5pm.
Viewing runs until Sunday. Download the catalogue at bernardi.co.za, or contact 012-342-3634 for more information.
