Leather and feathers for sale

A farm steeped in heritage, with architectural and scenic splendor to boot, is set to go under the hammer.

Evidently Bakenskraal, situated on the Robertson Pass road between Oudtshoorn and Mosselbay, is one of those properties that is filled with colour, character and commercial and agrarian allure. The sale has been entrusted to Consolidated Auction Group.

The property is internationally renowned for its refined leather-and-feather products and its Holstein stud. It’s said the Royal family sipped tea and ate scones on the premises during their historic visit to South Africa in 1947.

The massive farm spans more than 650 hectares, with expansive views over the Langeberg and Swartberg mountains to the east and north. To the south lies the mighty Outeniqua and a green band of hills and dales that separate the Garden Route from the Klein Karoo.

Bakenskraal lies in the fertile Elephants River Valley and was surveyed and proclaimed in 1843. Farming started in 1892 and it’s still one of the largest independent exporters of crust and tanned ostrich skins in South Africa.

Its long-established Holstein stud and other agricultural features, such as the vast swathe of potential arable land of some 140 hectares, and an additional 40 hectares set aside for flood irrigation, all contribute to the investment potential of the property.

In the meantime, Consolidated is getting geared up for a spate of sales. First up, tomorrow, is an “all-stock-must-go” double-mart featuring R10 million worth of brand new, no-reserve items. Much of it is still retail-wrapped and intended for the children’s market. There will also be a disposal where bidders can expect furniture for household and outdoor use, including bar and entertainment furniture, tiles, general DIY stocks and hardware.
