Get revved up for classics

Consolidated Auction Group will be holding its next classic car and motorcycle sale tomorrow.

A 2009 Cobra Backdraft 460 and a 1964 Chevrolet Impala Pillarless – both in blazing blue with cool chrome trimmings – are but two of the immaculately cared-for collectible cars that will come up for auction.

“The way these cars make your spirit soar when the key turns and the engines roar – it is the best tonic one can ask for,” says Chico da Silva, Consolidated’s founding auctioneer.

“It’s a case of a thundering boom versus a rippling roar, in respect of the Cobra and the Chev. The former is all about brash, modern-day power whereas the latter, a golden oldie, adds a modicum of yesteryear’s savoir-faire to our classic fair.”

Motorheads with the wherewithal to take this bewitching monster to the closest speed track, however, will find that it’s the closet thing to having a jet engine shoved up a low-profiled truck’s behind.

Of course, Consolidated, knowing full well that although they like to cater for all aficionados of fine and ferocious motoring, also knows how to keep it real – so to speak.

And so fittingly, as per classic class, bidders can also expect a lime-green 1973 Ford Torino Estate Car. Its colour is a bit of a shocker, all garish 1970s luridness, but classic cool is in the heart of the collector and there’s no mistake that this one’s a keeper.

The 1970 Mercedes 280S, of course, is true classic style – white, pure and pretty down to its wheel caps, notorious for “migrating”, rather oddly, to the wheels of other cars, usually taxis.

Then there are the motorcycles.

Take the 2008 Ducati 1098 S Tricolore for example – a real blast, although not from the past, like most of the other lots at this sensational sale.
