Browse, learn – and buy antiques

The many antique dealers come from all over the country and have the widest selection of quality antiques and collectables – from rare glassware to valuable silver to books and bric-a-brac.

Open from 9am to 16pm, the fair stretches along the upper and lower levels of Nelson Mandela Square, well away from the cold. A classical quartet will entertain you with beautiful music between 11am and 1pm on the Lower Level, and when you’re tired of browsing, you can stop at one of the cafes or restaurants for a bite to eat.

The antique dealers, who come from as far afield as Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Durban, all have their regular spots and are among the most experienced dealers in the country. Many are specialists in their field – be it in silverware, glassware or porcelain – and are more than willing to advise you and give their expert opinion and market value of any item you might have or want to buy.

If you are thinking of starting a collection, the choices are limitless. From collecting thimbles to art deco jewellery; from Murano glass to Royal Doulton; from pipes to maps – the dealers will be more than happy to give you tips on how to start and will keep an eye out for items to add to your collection.

The Antiques Fair at Nelson Mandela Square will take place on July 6 from 9am to 4pm on the upper and lower levels of the square.
