Newcastle Airport project ‘back on track’
The embattled airport made headlines in January, following complaints from local pilots after fuel reserves at the facility ran dry.

After lengthy delays, the Newcastle Airport project is “back on track”, reports Newcastle Advertiser.
Municipal officials have confirmed a national tender has gone out, inviting local airline companies to bring chartered flight services to the facility.
“We have already begun calls for SA Airlink to occupy the airport,” said Newcastle municipality’s head of communications, Dr Dumisani Thabethe. “That’s the action we are currently busy with at the moment. We are also finalising the current snags and have achieved practical completion.”

According to other municipal sources, all payments to sub-contractors have been settled, leaving only the minor problems to still be resolved. The terminal building is thus expected to be handed over soon.
With two tenders – one for the GPS navigation system and the other for a coffee shop – out for bids, the only problem is reportedly with finding a competent fuel supplier.
This is one of the most urgent matters in the facility’s readiness status.

“We have tenants waiting to occupy [the building] once we have the final occupation certificate,” officials concluded.
