Muzi Yeni not out to make ‘chomies’ with Greyville rivals

Popular jockey Muzi Yeni has been his usual hardworking self in the 2021/22 season and has reaped rewards of 40 wins and third place on the jockeys’ championship log.

Back in his hometown of Durban on Wednesday he could collect another swag of prize money from some promising rides.

Early on in proceedings on the Greyville Polytrack – in Races 2 and 3 – Yeni teams up with trainer Duncan Howells and could complete a swift double.

Three-year-old filly Lucky Miss has shown inexperience in her three runs to date, but last time out grabbed a runner-up cheque despite racing awkwardly. Yeni rode her that day and will now know a lot more about the daughter of What A Winter.

Also, that race was over 1400m on the Scottsville turf and the same test on the Poly should be a little less arduous. The No 3 draw is a positive around the tight right-hand turn.

Yeni and Lucky Miss are being asked to beat Lady Yusra, another young filly who has recent form to indicate she won’t be in the maidens for long and, while the Dean Kannemeyer runner has the advantage of experience on the Poly, she is drawn a little wide at 12.

In the next race, Yeni gets onto Howells’s three-year-old filly Shield Maiden, who is a tough ride but has shown signs of innate talent.

Yeni’s next good chance comes in Race 5 when he links up with We All Chomies from the Kum Naidoo stable.

Three second places with losing margins of less than a length in recent weeks translates into the two-time-winner banging down the door to claim a third gong.

Yeni has been partnering We All Chomies of late, so knows better than most that the time is ripe to translate form into money. Put it this way, he won’t be treating the opposition as “chomies”.

In Race 7, front-running Tiger Tank could keep on trucking for Yeni.
