Lollapalooza stands out as one to carry our hopes

Some of the form in Monday’s card for Fairview is so impenetrable punters will be forced to go wide in a few races, which means they’ll be casting about for a banker elsewhere to keep wagering costs in check.

Luckily, a couple of possibilities present themselves.

With a name like Lollopalooza, we cannot skim over one of Alan Greeff’s runners in Race 7, an FM76 Handicap over 1600m.

And, looking a little closer, it becomes clear this filly is just about the day’s best bet. The three-year-old has five runs under the belt, including a win at the Vaal in June when she was in the care of Ashley Fortune.

Transferred by Mauritzfontein to Eastern Cape, the daughter of Soft Falling Rain has come very close on two occasions – once running on into second spot from a crummy draw and once coming third despite a crown scalping along the way. Both those runs were over distances short of her best and she now gets back to the trip she won over.

So, she ought to have already opened her account at the coast. Greeff and stable jockey Greg Cheyne will want to get the job done for influential owners and they have a golden opportunity here.

Opposition in the pack comes from Perfect Angel, from the Juan Nel stable, and Gavin Smith-trained Glitter In The Air, both of whom have the potential to upset bettor’s best-laid plans.

If punters feel they have to include one or both of those challengers, they might turn to On Your Marks in the last race to carry banker hopes.

Candice Bass-Robinson moved this gelding to Fairview from her Cape Town base as he appeared to be battling down south. His recent local runs have delivered two runner-up spots, so he looks well primed to get on the scoreboard under powerful rider Craig Zackey.

Trouble is, rival Linguee also has two recent seconds to his name.
