Just Fabulous is not just stubborn, she’s speedy, too

Computaform’s comments on horses’ race performance are very abbreviated – necessarily given the shortage of space in the book. However, the pundits have managed to cram “stubborn, slow, gutsy, stubborn (again), hanging and respiratory noise” into the tiny crevices reserved for the two outings of filly Just Fabulous.

Most of that indicates the young madam is not the easiest of rides. Yet she managed a win and a second in those races, which were 10 weeks apart. Clearly trainer Alec Laird’s charge has plenty of talent and, if she can curb the youthful wilfulness, might be live up to her name.

Not that you’d want her to lose her feistiness, just learn to deploy it positively.

Just Fabulous makes her third racecourse appearance on Thursday at the Vaal, in Race 8, a 1600m FM80 Handicap that she is weighted to win easily – making her the best bet on the card.

The daughter of Judpot made her winning debut over 1400m at Turffontein on 9 August, despite the bolshiness, and had a merit rating of 85 slapped on her. Next time, in an FM80 Handicap, she went down narrowly – stroppy again and maybe a bit rusty – and earned another two MR points.

S’Manga Khumalo partnered Just Fabulous on both occasions, so has got to know her quirks and will have a plan to overcome the opposition and a wide draw of 11.
