Jockey Aldo Domeyer and trainer Candice Bass-Robinson have had a successful partnership for a long while and are currently on a run of hot form that’s likely to continue at Durbanville on Tuesday afternoon.
In the past 28 days, Domeyer has visited the winner’s box eight times at the country course, for a winning percentage of more than 40. Bass-Robinson has saddled 13 Durbanville winners in that period, for a stat of 23%.
They join forces with five horses on Tuesday and look good for a double, if not a treble.
The first in the sequence is African Rain in Race 3, a Progress Plate over 1250m.
The progressive son of Soft Falling Rain has three wins from seven starts and looked a cut above when cruising home last time out at this track over 1000m – in his first run after being gelded. Extra ground should suit him.
The obvious threat to African Rain is fellow three-year-old Zapatillas from another in-form team: trainer Brett Crawford and jockey Luy Mxothwa.
This colt is unbeaten in two and got up on the line to win a minor feature last time out.
African Rain’s greater experience and knowledge of the quirky Durbanville circuit swing the vote his way.
Bass-Robinson and Domeyer step out with Resonate in the next race, a MR68 Handicap over 1250m. Said to be highly rated by his connections, this newly gelded colt was an impressive course-and-distance winner 29 days ago – in yielding going at short odds.
Resonate will have to get the better of Winchester Mansion – another Crawford-Mxothwa hopeful.
The third leg of the potential Bass-Robinson-Domeyer winning treble is in the hands of Silent Trigger in Race 5, a MR74 Handicap over 1400m. A well-bred young colt, he shed his maiden at the second attempt a month ago with a sustained gallop up the Kenilworth straight.
The Crawford-Mxothwa challenge comes in the form of Future Prince, a debut winner at the same meeting last month and another colt with an apparently bright future.
Further danger lurks in the form of Justin Snaith-trained Pacaya.
