Born in the UK, John attended his first F1 race at Silverstone as a young boy with his father in the late 1950s, and the lifelong passion was born. A later move to SA and it became Kyalami and Killarney that kept the flame burning before he became involved in preparing competition cars and competed in both National and Regional Rallying. Over the years he has been involved in motorsports broadcasting on television and radio and has been a columnist for The Citizen since 2014, covering Formula One and the World Rally Championship.
