Marlboro soccer club donates kit in Alex

MARLBORO - Junior soccer players in Alexandra got a pleasant surprise when they received a soccer kit courtesy of the Marlboro Gardens Football Club.

The donation took place at the iconic Alexandra Stadium as a goodwill gesture by the club in its bid to maintain a good relationship between both communities. The township’s 10 soccer teams, including two ladies’ sides, were the recipients of the kit together with soccer balls.

The under six, seven, eight, nine and 10 soccer teams got to show this kit off during the annual Marlboro Gardens Football Club Soccer Day held at the Marlboro Stadium. The tournament had 110 soccer teams (including 1 200 players) from all over Gauteng participating in 700 matches throughout the day. There was no outright winner as the tournament was about the players enjoying themselves.

“We wanted to ramp things up this year by inviting a whole lot more teams than ever before,” said Lee Ebrahim, chairman of the Marlboro Gardens Football Club.

“In the 27 years of existence of our club, our ethos has always been to boost the confidence of young soccer players and we are in a position to help in their bid to become superstars in the future. Such events do help them develop at a faster rate and the only way a country’s sporting code can go higher is if the grassroots are well tended to. I believe we are doing that.”
