Two Wits third year social work students have been working part-time at the Headway Khomelela centre in Alex.

The centre cares for and rehabilitates people with brain injuries.

Students Dineo Moloi and Nkatane Tladi from Voslorus and Benoni respectively had also been assigned the mammoth task of helping to spread the message to the Alexandra community about the resources and services that are provided by various NGOs in the township.

As part of its programme for the practical training of its students, Wits University launched the Masakhane Project in 2011, which is an ongoing project which seeks to educate the community about the various organisations operating within the community so they can seek help in times of need.

The organisations which have been grouped under the Masakhane Project include Headway Khomelela, Friend for Life, SANCA Alexandra, Agisanang Domestic Abuse Prevention and Training better known as Adapt, Alex Besafe Centre, Alexandra Kidz Clinic, Lifeline, Health Promoters from the City of Johannesburg, Hospice and Rehab Centre, Early Childhood Development Forum, Talk to me Community project, Alexandra Development Centre, Sithandiwe Home, and Alex Rehab at Alex Clinic.

“We have enjoyed our time mixing with the community of Alexandra and sharing valuable information that has seen us visit various schools, both primary and secondary, daycare centres, community meetings and so forth,” Moloi said.
