Fight to have permanent police station taken to national government

The Democratic Alliance in Ward 38 takes the fight for a permanent police station to national government.

The DA in Ward 38 has taken the fight for a permanent police station to the national government through a petition submitted by DA Alberton constituency head and member of parliament, Tsholofelo Bodlani.

At a portfolio committee meeting of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) held on February 22, the DA made a strong case for why the residents of Ward 38 and surrounding areas need a permanent police station.

Among the issues raised, are insufficient ablution facilities at the station and inadequate space at the charge office.

“It is the view of the DA that residents served by the police station deserve a station with adequate resources to cater to their needs.

“The DA also believes a permanent police station would best serve the officers by giving them adequate resources such as holding cells and ablution facilities,” explained Ward 38 Clr Thavha Maifala-Masebe.

He said the fight for a permanent station aligns with the party’s commitment to prioritise safety issues as per the manifesto presented to voters, ahead of the 2021 local government elections.

This, according to Maifala-Masebe, to have a permanent police station in the area is also in support of Ward 38’s integrated development plan request from the ward committee.

“We understand that there is a new lease between the City of Ekurhuleni and the national DPWI ending in 2028. It is the view of the DA that a permanent police station is a better solution to addressing issues of safety in the area.

“According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the DPWI is R1.5m in arrears. The DA will be sourcing the details around the new lease and the amount is still in areas from the city,” he said.

Maifala-Masebe said this will be done relating to good governance practices between both spheres of government.

He reiterated the party is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents by fighting for a permanent police station to serve all affected communities.
