South Africa is currently on lockdown Level 2, in Covid-19 wave number 3, and had a moment of Stage 4 load-shedding. These are some of the stories that have gripped the nation this week.

Lockdown Level 2: SA’s state of disaster extended by another month

The South African government approved the extension of the national state of disaster by another month, to July 15. South Africa is currently on Lockdown Level 2. Read more on The Citizen.

Covid-19: SA officially moves into third wave

The Department of Health announced that the country officially moved into the third wave of Covid-19 on June 10.

Gauteng is leading the new wave with the highest number of active cases in the country and 61% (5 597) of new cases on June 10, followed by the Western Cape with 932 new cases, which is just 10% of the national cases.

Eskom implements Stage 4 load-shedding

Eskom implemented Stage 4 load-shedding on Wednesday – the highest stage so far this year – due to additional breakdowns of a unit at Medupi and two units at Duvha power stations.

Currently, South Africa is in Stage 1 load-shedding, which is expected to cease this evening (June 13) at 22:00.

#Thembisa10: ‘We traced the family’ – City of Ekurhuleni Mayor

South Africans expressed shock and admiration this week, after Gosiame Thamara Sithole from Thembisa gave birth to decuplets.

According to a source in the City of Ekurhuleni, a team from the mayor’s office had been able to trace the family of the Thembisa babies who have been making headline news this week. The number of babies born is yet to be confirmed. Read more on this story by clicking here.

President Ramaphosa places Mkhize on special leave

Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize was placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday (June 8) this week.

This decision was made as a result of Mkhize’s alleged involvement in contracts between the health department and a service provider called Digital Vibes.

Clover relocates cheese production to Queensburgh

Dairy group Clover reported in a statement that it will be moving its biggest cheese production plant from Lichtenburg in the North West to Queensburgh in KwaZulu-Natal.

Clover stated that for years, the Lichtenburg factory in the North West has been experiencing water and power outages and the surrounding infrastructure has not been maintained by the municipality.
