Lesufi ready for 2018

Lesufi dubbed January education focus month.

EDUCATION MEC Panyaza Lesufi says he has a plan for the 2018 academic year.

This was at a briefing he had on January 7 where he said the plan included dealing with admission placement and the state of readiness in relation to the provisioning of quality basic education.

The briefing was held at Simmonds Street and was organised ahead of schools reopening on January 17.

Lesufi dubbed January education focus month.

He said his focus was to address the concerns of parents whose children had not been placed.

“We wish to assure parents that all children will be placed in a school before the schools open on January 17. Parents that still have admission challenges are urged to contact the Johannesburg South district office in Ormonde. Address 100 Northern Parkway Street, Crownwood building, Ormonde. Contact number 073 199 6791.

“Officials from the department will assist to place the unplaced learners and attend to all parents applying for the first time.”

Lesufi said 17 000 learners, whose parents applied in time, have not been placed.

“Unfortunately, they [learners] have applied in high-pressure areas where there is a shortage of space. It should also be noted that those parents declined alternative offers of placement. The parents should rest assured that their children will be placed before the schools open.”

He said 22 921 late applications were received towards the end of the year and 8 865 learners from that group were placed leaving 14 056 unplaced.

He urged parents to accept offers of placement from schools with available space.

He noted that several schools were damaged during the December storms but reassured parents that those schools were scheduled to be repaired at an estimated cost of R140-million.

Matriculants were urged to note that results queries should be submitted for investigation within 30 days after the release of the results.

Candidates should report any inaccuracies in their statements of results before June 30.

Deadline for rechecking and remarking of scripts was January 19.

The deadline to register for supplementary exams was also January 19.

Lesufi urged all learners to seek the necessary support and intervention and contact childcare on 0800 055 555 or Childline GP on 011 645 2000.
