Protesters still striking on R59

Try to use alternative routes.

MOTORISTS travelling via the R59 should use alternative routes as strikes and disruptions on the R59 are ongoing. People have been warned that the R59 near Meyerton, Vereeniging is closed due to protests.

According to sources residents of the Sicelo informal settlement in Meyerton have been striking since 4.40am on July 5 (today) still blocking the road and throwing bricks and stones at vehicles.

Police had to use stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

A woman and her two daughters sustained minor injuries after her vehicle had apparently been pelted with rocks while driving down Morris Road today. ER24 paramedics responded to the scene and found a heavy local law enforcement presence. Protesters are striking for housing and service delivery.

One of the motorists who travels to Meyerton on a daily basis was thrown with rocks and crackers on Monday, July 3. According to the Citizen motorists have been advised to completely avoid the R59 highway in the wake of the tense stand-off between the police and protesters.

Pitso Mofokeng shared a video on social media with the following message: ‘Meyerton it’s a big strike, people fighting for houses and they block the highway R59 road they even burn truck and car on same road ..this strike started on Sunday night till day and it’s still going on.’
