Everything you need to know about making the most of the Sandton leg of the World Ecomobility Festival.
Pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users will be put first during the EcoMobile World Festival 2015
Public transport, cyclists and pedestrians will be given preference on the streets of Sandton during the month-long EcoMobility World Festival in October 2015.
Road use will be changed on some of the streets in the Sandton CBD as well as some of the streets leading into Sandton but the City of Johannesburg is taking major steps to ensure that Sandton can continue to function as an important financial district and commercial hub.
One of the aims of the EcoMobility World Festival is to give people a preview of a future transport system where public transport, walking and cycling become the modes of choice.
The Sandton CBD, one of the busiest districts in South Africa, will be decongested and its streets turned into public spaces where people will be able to move from point to point using public transport, walking, cycling and eco-mobile vehicles.
Changing the use of identified streets will lead to a certain level of “discomfort” for people entering Sandton but will not create “dysfunctionality”. The discomfort and inconvenience caused by the closures will be matched by the comfort of using public transport, walking and cycling around Sandton.
The City is confident that retail businesses will benefit from the closure of the streets as the Festival is intended to attract “feet to the streets” in the form of pedestrians who will attend the various events hosted during the month and enjoy the opportunity to walk around in a car-free environment.
A comprehensive Transport Management Plan (TMP) has been drawn up by the City after consultation with local stakeholders including residents, the business community and the hospitality sector, as well as extensive traffic studies.
The changes introduced during the Festival are the start of process of long-term changes. The streets will now begin to give dignity to pedestrians, access to cyclists and safety to public transport users.
What will be different during the duration of the EcoMobility World Festival 2015 in the Sandton CBD?
Below is the Eco-Mobility Footprint.
The Footprint shows how the streets will be affected and changed in Sandton during the Festival period. Deliveries, people with disability, construction vehicles and private cars will still be able to reach their destinations throughout the EcoMobility Festival period. However, in some instances, the operations of the route will be changed which could result in delays to motorists in reaching their final destination.
The City is urging those who are in a position to use public transport to do so during the Festival periods and beyond. It is anticipated that the implementation of the Transport Management Plan and the greater use of public transport will result in quicker journey times than using private vehicles to travel into and out of the Sandton footprint area
The festival footprint is the area bounded by the following roads:
Starting at the intersection of Rivonia and 5th Street around the Sandton Gautrain station, continue along Rivonia to the north to Fredman Drive; turn left into 5th Street to the intersection of 5th and Rivonia Street. A general speed limit of 30km/h will be signposted for the area within the EcoMobility Precinct.
The changes to the streets within the precinct will be implemented between the 4 and 31 October 2015. There will also be disruptions to general traffic flows on Saturday 3 October as the changes in the footprint area are implemented and on 1 November when the streets will be returned to regular use.
West Street: West Street will be divided into two by a hoarding which will stretch from the corner of Fredman to near the entrance to the Michelangelo Hotel. Local vehicles, businesses, visitors, construction vehicles and affected businesses will be able to access their premises east of the median hoarding where no alternative access is possible.
The Gautrain Station internal drop-off/pickup facility and parking area will be accessible from Rivonia Road through managed access. For the section north of the Gautrain station, the Michelangelo, 135 West, Sandown Clinic and Citibank (145 West), employees and visitors will be given access to these properties. Pedestrian conflict in the traffic will be controlled and managed by designated JMPD officers.
Maude Street (West): Maude Street (West) between 5th Street and West Street will be fully accessible during weekdays from 5th Street only and will operate as a cul-de-sac with a turnaround facility at the break in the median at the Garden Court Hotel entrance.
Maude Street (East): This street will only be accessible via the intersection of West and Fredman or from Stella Street with an eastbound exit onto Rivonia Road only. The street will be converted into a one-way for the period of the Festival.
Alice Lane: Alice Lane will be fully accessible during weekdays from 5th Street only and will operate as a cul-de-sac with a turnaround facility at the intersection with West Street.
Gwen Lane: Gwen Lane will be fully accessible during weekdays from Fredman Drive only and will generally operate as a cul-de-sac at Maude Street (no throughway). During weekday peak hours, traffic to the JSE, HSBC and Deutsche Bank will be able to exit onto Maude Street towards Rivonia Road via the current dedicated channelized island lane.
Stella Street: This street will only be accessible via the intersection of West and Fredman with a northbound exit via the right turn onto Maude Street East.
What is managed access?
At all intersections leading to the Festival precinct, there will be JMPD officers supported by marshals who will inform traffic of the changes in road use and traffic flow. Commuters that still need to enter through the restricted areas within the festival precinct to access their businesses will be allowed to do so. No permits, stickers or accreditation is required. JMPD officials will also make sure that pedestrians and cyclists are protected from vehicular conflicts.
For shuttle services:
Please note that you will still be able to enter West Street at the corner of Rivonia to drop your customers off inside the Gautrain Station, but not in West Street. When vehicles exit the Gautrain Station, they will be required to turn south towards Rivonia Road. This means the managed-access entrance and exit for shuttle services will be from the intersection of Rivonia and West.
Shuttles which carry eight or more people will be able to use the public transport loop. Other shuttle services, with fewer than eight passengers, will need to join the mixed traffic to reach their destination.
All vehicles requiring access to the north side of West Street or Stella Street will need to enter West Street from the corner of Fredman and West. These vehicles will travel on the eastern carriageway of West Street to access businesses that are on the eastern side of West Street, Maude Street and/or Stella Street.
Delivery vehicles will be able to enter the various streets as above and the same restrictions on vehicles will also apply to delivery vehicles. The City encourages businesses to do deliveries during off-peak periods – between 9:00 and 15:00 or late at night.
People with disabilities will still be able to access all areas. The south side of West Street will be reconstructed to be universally-accessible during the Festival. All efforts will be made to ensure that the public transport loop is universally accessible.
The public transport loop
A public transport loop will be established during the Festival along Rivonia, Fredman and 5th Streets. Extra pavement space will be created and there will be eight temporary bus stops erected indicating the destinations of the various buses or minibus taxis that will stop along the route.

While all accesses to buildings and roads will remain open, private car users are urged to be more vigilant along the loop.
After the Festival, this temporary loop will be made permanent. In addition, there will be a demonstration commuter shelter at the corner of West and Fredman. After receiving feedback from the public, this shelter will be rolled out in different parts of the City.
For people who want to get around the loop, there will be free hop-on-hop-off Minibus taxis that will operate a distribution service from 06:00 to 19:00. This Minibus taxis will be branded so that it will be easily recognisable.
After the Festival, this temporary loop will be made permanent. In addition, there will be a demonstration commuter shelter at the corner of West and Fredman. After receiving feedback from the public, this shelter will be rolled out in different parts of the City.
What will be different coming into Sandton during the EcoMobility World Festival 2015?
People who use public transport or cycle will be given priority access during the EcoMobility World Festival.
Dedicated public transport lanes
Lanes will be converted to provide preferential access to public transport, buses, minibus taxis and shuttles carrying eight people or more during the 06:00 -09:00 morning peak hour and 15:30 -19:00 evening peak hour.
- Republic Road, William Nicol ,Sandton Drive and Rivonia Road between Brightwater Commons and the public transport loop
- William Nicol between Montecasino and Republic Road, Sandton Drive and Rivonia Road between Montecasino and the public transport loop
- Katherine Avenue between Grayston Drive and West Street.
Commuters using public transport will enjoy faster journeys while it may take longer for those using private cars, especially in the peak periods. The road space will be managed using cones and signage and JMPD officers will be on duty at the intersection on all the dedicated public transport lanes. The broad concept is shown in the figure below.
Dedicated Cycling routes
The City of Johannesburg is committed to make it safe, attractive and feasible to cycle to work and school. It is introducing a number of cycle lanes in different parts of the City. Permanent cycling lanes are being built in West and Maude Street in Sandton as well as between Sandton and Alexandra and will be constructed between Sandton and Rosebank over the next two years.
For the EcoMobility World Festival, four pop-up cycle lanes will be created, making it safer and easier to cycle to Sandton. The routes are as follows and are indicated in the diagram below:
- From Rosebank, via Fricker Avenue
- From Morningside via West South and Grayston; from Field of Study Area via 14th, 12th and 11th Street
- From Pick n Pay on William Nicol and Republic via 14th, 12th and 11th Street
- From Alexandra via Rautenbach and Grayston.
The City has inspected all these routes to ensure that they are safe and the Johannesburg Roads Agency will be undertaking certain maintenance on these routes in preparation for the Festival.
The City also arranged for the following:
- Park and cycle facilities at the Pick n Pay on Nicol and at the Morningside Shopping Centre. Cyclists will be able to park their cars for a nominal fee and cycle the rest of their journey to and from Sandton. Some companies will also provide cycle storage facilities.
- Temporary cycle lanes along Maude Street demarcated by cones
- Wider access to cycle racks such as temporary bike racks on West Street near the exhibition centre and at the Gautrain Station.
- Way-finding signage, tree wrapping, marshals and additional security on the pop-up cycle lanes.
Cycle route details
Details of the cycle routes are as follows:
Cycle Route 1: Rosebank to Sandton
This route services the Rosebank CBD and environs, starting on Cradock Ave and entering the Sandton CBD via Alice Lane. The length of the route is 5.39km
Join the route on Cradock Ave; road closure on Jellicoe to be opened; road closure on Bompas to be opened; continue straight onto Melville Road; left onto Rivonia; left into Eton Road; open road closure on Harrow; right into Empire Place; left and through Growthpoint Property – gate to be opened; left onto Sandton Drive; right into Alice Lane; right into 5th Street; left into Maude St.
Marshals will be at the following intersections to guide cyclists through the junctions:
- Cradock & Jellicoe Avenue.
- Cradock & Bompas Road.
- Melville Road & Rivonia.
- Rivonia & Eton Road.
- Harrow & Empire Place.
- Sandton Drive & Alice Lane
- Alice Lane & 5th Street.
- 5th Street& Maude Street.
This is the most direct and convenient access between Rosebank and Sandton and is being developed as a partnership between the City of Johannesburg and the local business community. After the festival a cycle bridge across Sandton Drive will be sponsored by Growthpoint Properties.
Cycle Route 2: Alexandra to Sandton
This route will start at the Pan Africa Taxi Rank in Alexandra and enter the Sandton CBD via Linden/Maude Street. The length of the route is 3.17km
Join the route on 3rd Street; left onto Rautenbach Avenue; continue onto Grayston Drive; left onto Katherine; right onto Linden Street.
Marshals will be at the following intersections to guide cyclists through the junctions:
- Watt Ave. & 3rd Street.
- M1/Grayston Drive Eastern Ramps
- M1/Grayston Drive Western Ramps
- Grayston & Katherine
- Maude Street & Rivonia Road.
Cycle infrastructure is complete on Rautenbach Avenue. Katherine Street and Linden Street will be completed in time for the EcoMobility Festival. Contractors are busy with the Grayston Drive/M1 pedestrian bridge and cyclists will have to manage this area carefully.
Cyclists will be guided by way-finding signage and wrapped trees.
Cycle Route 3: Morningside to Sandton
This route starts at the Morningside Shopping Centre and enters the Sandton CBD via West Street.
Cyclists are advised to enter the undercover parking of the Morningside Shopping Centre via Waggon Road. Marshals will direct vehicle to allocated bays. Parking will be charged at R10 for the day. The parkade is open 24 hours and has its own secured access with a boom gate.
The length of the cycle route is 2.8km.
Join the route outside the parkade on Waggon Road; turn right onto Outspan Road; left onto West Road (south); right onto Grayston; and left onto West Street.
Marshals will be at the following intersections to guide cyclists through the junctions:
- Outspan Road. & West Road (South).
- West Road (South) & Grayston;
- Grayston & West Street.
- West Street. & 5th Street.
Cyclists will be guided by wayfinding signage and wrapped trees.
Cycle Route 4: Pick n Pay on Nicol to Sandton
This route starts at the Pick n Pay on William Nicol Drive and enters the Sandton CBD via West Street.
Cyclists are urged to enter the parking via William Nicol Drive. Marshals will direct vehicles to allocated bays. Parking will be charged at R10 for the day. The parkade is open 24 hours and has its own secured access with a boom gate.
The length of the cycle route is 3.7km.
Join the route outside the parkade on William Nicol; turn left into Mattie Avenue; right into 14th Street; right onto Marie Avenue; left onto 12th Street, right onto 11th Street; left into Elizabeth Avenue; through the Benmore Shopping Centre; turn right onto West St.
Marshals will be at the following intersections to guide cyclists through the junctions:
- William Nicol Drive & Mattie Avenue.
- 12 St. & 11th Streets.
- Benmore Road. & Pam Road.
- Benmore & Grayston Drive.
Cyclists will be guided by way-finding signage and wrapped trees.
Cycle Jozi Bike Trains
The City in partnership with JUCA is also arranging bike trains for the duration of the Festival. Cyclists who want to cycle in a group to Sandton will be able to join a face book page to find out which other cyclist are travelling from his or her area and communicate with them starting times and venues. In addition, to the specific cycle routes indicated Johannesburg has many suburban roads where vehicle traffic and speed accommodate cyclists. Such roads are ideal for commuter cycling and do not need any kind of physical cycle lane infrastructure. The Johannesburg Cycle map produced by the Johannesburg Urban Cyclists Association (JUCA) highlights many of these cycle routes around Johannesburg. Public transport options
Workers, residents and visitors to Sandton in October are encouraged to leave their private cars at home and make use of a wide range of alternative transport options on weekdays and weekends to come to work or visit Sandton, including the Festival events.
Commuters can use public transport from their homes where park and ride facilities are located within walking distance or from the park and ride facilities. Among the options that will be available from different locations in the City, are:

Dedicated park and ride facilities will be in operation for the duration of the Festival. Commuters can park their vehicles at these locations and then use public transport and alternative transport to travel into Sandton. Some of these Park and Rides will continue to be available after the Festival.
Below is a summary of the various Park and Ride locations as well as details on operations and pricing.
Details of each Park and Ride are as follows:
Located at the corner of Athol Street and Johannesburg Road in Highlands North, this Park and Ride will provide 300 parking bays. Commuters will be transported by Metrobus to the Sandton CBD via Katherine Street along dedicated public transport lanes and can disembark at any of the eight stops along the public transport loop. A parking fee of R10.00 will be charged at the Park and Ride and an additional R16.30 for the bus trip.
Located off Republic Road in Randburg, this Park and Ride will provide 700 parking bays. Commuters will be transported by Gautrain bus services to the Sandton CBD.These buses will make use of the dedicated public transport lane along Republic Road. This can cut over half an hour off the journey time. A parking fee of R10.00 will be charged at the Park and Ride and an additional R20.00 for the bus trip.
Located off Beyers Naude Drive, the Cresta Shopping Centre Park and Ride will provide 500 roof top parking bays. Commuters will be transported to Sandton by Metrobus.
A parking fee of R10.00 will be charged at the Park and Ride and an additional R16.30 for the bus trip.
Emperors Palace
Located at 64 Jones Road in Kempton Park, this Park and Ride has a parking capacity for 1 000 vehicles. Commuters will be transported by Gautrain bus to Rhodesfield station to transfer to the Gautrain to Sandton.
A flat parking rate of R10.00 will be charged and the cost of the bus trip will be R7.00 with an additional charge of R37.00 for the Gautrain trip.
Located at the intersection of Marie and Sandton Drive this Park and Ride will provide 300 bays. It is recommended that parkers access the site via Sutherland Avenue (which turns off Argyle Avenue). The parking entrance will be near the bend where it meets St Andrews Road.
Commuters will be transported to Sandton by means of minibus taxis at no charge. Parking at this facility will also be free. Extra security in the form of a perimeter fence and formal security personnel services will be provided for the operating times of the Park and Ride — 06:00-20:00. Additional human resources in the form of marshals and volunteers will be provided to assist users.
Located at the intersection of Katherine Street and Grayston Drive in Sandton, this facility will provide 300 parking bays.
Commuters will be transported to Sandton by means of minibus taxis at no charge. Parking at this facility will also be free. Security measures in the form of formal security personnel, marshals and volunteers will be provided for this Park and Ride. Services will be for the full duration of the Park and Ride during operating hours from 06:00-20:00.
Located between 8th Avenue and 14th Avenue in Parkmore, this Park and Ride is within close proximity to George Lea Park and will provide parking for 500 cars. Extra security in the form of a perimeter fence and formal security personnel services will be provided for the operating times of the Park and Ride from 06:00-20:00. Additional human resources in the form of marshals and volunteers will be provided to assist users.
Motorists will park at no charge and public transport service by means of minibus taxis will be provided at no charge to commuters.
Maponya Mall
Located off Chris Hani Road in Soweto, this Park and Ride will provide 300 parking bays. Commuters will then be able to take the Rea Vaya to Park Station and use the Gautrain from there to Sandton.
Commuters should note that Rea Vaya does not provide a direct service to Braamfontein from this Park and Ride. Rea Vaya feeder bus can be boarded along Chris Hani Drive to Lakeview Station to connect to trunk service to Braamfontein. It is advised that commuters use Rea Vaya T2 route — Thokoza Park to Braamfontein via the Soweto Highway to avoid further transfer in the Joburg CBD.
A flat rate parking charge of R10.00 will be charged at this facility. Commuters will need to pay for Rea Vaya fare at R13.30 per a single trip fare. Commuters are encouraged to purchase a Rea Vaya Smartcard at a cost of R20.00 and load money for the trips envisaged for the month of October. Smart cards can be purchased from the following Rea Vaya stations:
- Orlando Stadium;
- Diepkloof Station; and
- Park Station
Commuters travelling beyond Braamfontein will make use of the Gautrain services from Park Station to Sandton. The cost of the rail service is R26.00 for a single train fare.
Located off Atholl-Oaklands Road in Melrose, this Park and Ride will provide 200 basement parking bays. Commuters will be able to travel to Rosebank via Gautrain bus and reach their final destination in Sandton by making use of the Gautrain.
The cost of parking will be R10.00 plus Gautrain bus fare of R7.00 per single trip and the train to Rosebank and Sandton which is R23.00 single train fare. In total, commuters will pay R30.00 for a single trip to Sandton on a day.
Located at the corner of William Nicol & Witkoppen Road in Fourways, this Park and Ride will provide 1 500 parking bays. Commuters will be transported to Sandton by Gautrain and Putco bus services.
A flat parking rate of R10.00 for parking will be charged. Two public transport services will be provided at this Park and Ride by Putco and Gautrain feeder buses. The cost for a Gautrain feeder bus will be R20.00
Located at the intersection of Martha Louw and Mooki Street in Orlando East, Soweto this Park and Ride will provide 250 parking bays. This Park and Ride will be serviced by Rea Vaya.
Commuters will be able to use this service for travelling to Park Station. Those travelling to the Sandton CBD can then make use of the Gautrain rail services at Park Station.
Commuters will pay a flat rate of R10.00 for parking and a bus fare to Braamfontein with Rea Vaya will cost R11.30 for a single trip fare. Commuters are encouraged to purchase Rea Vaya Smartcard at a cost of R20.00 and load money for the trips envisaged for the month of October. Smart cards can be purchased from the following Rea Vaya stations:
- Orlando Stadium;
- Diepkloof Station; and
- Park Station
Commuters travelling beyond Braamfontein will make use of the Gautrain services from Park Station to Sandton. The cost of the rail service is R26.00 for a single train fare.
Located off Sentrum Road in Randburg, 1500 parking bays will be provided at this Park and Ride. Commuters will be transported to Sandton by minibus taxis. A flat parking rate of R10 will be charged for the use of this facility. The minibus taxi service to Sandton will be free.
Westgate Shopping Centre
Located off Ontdekkers Road in Horizon View, 250 parking bays will be provided at this Park and Ride. Commuters will be transported to Sandton by Metrobus. Commuters will pay a flat rate of R10.00 for parking. Metrobus bus service from Westgate shopping centre to Sandton CBD will be charged at R20.50
Public Transport Services
The City of Johannesburg have engaged with various public transport operators including Putco, Metrobus, Rea Vaya BRT, Gautrain and minibus taxis to ensure that there is sufficient public transport alternatives available during October. These services provide efficient linkages between Park and Ride locations and the Sandton central core area.

Information about public transport operators, fares and where to buy tickets
The following operators will provide services during the Festival:
Metrobus
Metrobus recently added 30 dual fuel-buses to their fleet. This new fleet is also branded in colours similar to the Rea Vaya BRT to show that the City is committed to integrating all public transport.
Metrobus tickets can be purchased from the following ticket outlets:
- Monday to Friday from 05:30 to 18:30: Ghandi Square, Main Street Johannesburg CBD;
- Saturdays from 06:00 to 14:00: Ghandi Square, Main Street Johannesburg CBD;
- Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 18:00: Cresta Shopping Centre, Beyers Naude Drive (next to Homemark Entrance 1)
- Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00: Cresta Shopping Centre, Beyers Naude Drive (next to Homemark Entrance 1)
- Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:00: Park Station, Lower Level, Braamfontein (close to Nando’s)
- Saturdays from 08:30 to 13:00: Park Station, Lower Level, Braamfontein (close to Nando’s)
- Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 18:00: Roodepoort Metrobus Depot, 15 President Street, Princess, Roodepoort

Rea Vaya BRT
Rea Vaya services from Soweto to Park Station provide an alternative to private vehicle travel from the South. Transferring at Park Station to Gautrain rail services will allow a direct access into Sandton via the Sandton station.
Smartcards can be obtained at the following stations:
- Orlando Stadium
- Diepkloof
- University of Johannesburg – Kingsway Campus
- Park Station
- Johannesburg Art Gallery
- Carlton Centre
Times of operations for weekdays are 05:00-21:00 and on weekends from 05:00-18:00.
Putco
Putco buses normally transport commuters during the peak hours and most people who use Putco buses travel on monthly tickets. However, Putco has added 7 buses for the Festival that will be operating from Montecasino Park and Ride. Daily or weekly tickets can also be bought at the following Putco bus services ticket outlets
- Mondays from 15:00-17:00 : West and Grayston Drive intersection in Sandton
- Mondays from 12:00-17:00 : Sandton Drive, Sandton City
- Tuesdays from 15:00-17:50: West and Graystone Drive intersection in Sandton
- Tuesdays from 15:00-17:30: Sandton Drive, Sandton City
- Fridays from 15:00-17:35 : West and Grayston Drive intersection in Sandton
- Fridays from 11:30-17:30: West and Grayston Drive intersection in Sandton
- Saturdays from 09:00-13:30: Sandton Drive, Sandton City
Gautrain and Gautrain buses
Gautrain offers rail and bus services into Sandton.
Passengers can make use of the Gautrain rail services from Hatfield, Midrand and Marlboro stations. Information on the Gautrain rail services such as fares, timetables, route map, etc. can be obtained from www.gautrain.co.za.
In partnership with the City of Johannesburg, Gautrain will also be providing additional service for EcoMobility Festival passengers at the following Park and Rides:
- Brightwater Commons;
- Montecasino; and
- Emperors Palace.
Park and Ride users are encouraged to use the Gautrain services. Commuters will need to have a Gautrain Gold card including for Gautrain bus services. The Gautrain card can also be purchased at the following outlets during the EcoMobility Festival:
- Brightwater Commons; and
- Sandton Convention Centre

Last mile and ecomobile services
Last mile services such as tuk-tuks, metered taxis and Uber will continue to operate normally. Metered taxis will be available at the various hotels or on Alice Lane. Tuk-tuks will be located along West Street between Rivonia Road and Stella Street.
Private sector partners will be able to operate shuttle services with vehicles which transport eight or more passengers along the public transport loop.
Within the Sandton precinct, there will be an ecomobile fleet available. Final details of this service are currently being finalised. Please refer to the website for an update on such services.

Two dedicated City of Johannesburg Information Centre will be operation, starting in mid-September One will be stationed at the Sandton Convention Centre and the second one at or near the Gautrain Station – venue to be confirmed.
A special EcoMobility App (VayaMoja) will be able to be downloaded at your local App Store available from 1 October 2015. You can do this by searching your relevant app store or click on the links below and search for VayaMoja.
