Ditched Russell Domingo won’t be out of a job for long

The soon-to-be ex-Proteas coach is touted to become the mentor of the Centurion franchise in the Global T20 league.

Russell Domingo may be out of contract as the national coach, but looks set to land a big money job in the T20 Global League that gets underway in November as he has been touted as the head coach of the franchise that will be based at Centurion.

Domingo returned from the failed tour of England without any clarity on his future with the Proteas, but seemed resigned to his fate and the fact that his contract would not be renewed by Cricket South Africa.

The well-travelled West Indies’ Ottis Gibson, currently England’s bowling coach, is tipped to take over from Domingo.

But the 42-year-old from the Eastern Cape seems to have his immediate future looked after as he is set to join other high-profile coaches like Stephen Fleming and Eric Simons (Stellenbosch Monarchs) and Robin Singh, Allan Donald and Robin Peterson (Bloem City Blazers) in the new T20 league.

Another high-profile appointment is set to be made on Monday when former Proteas captain Graeme Smith is named as the head coach of the Benoni Zalmi, but Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth are still waiting for their head coaches to be confirmed.

But it’s all good news coming out of SuperSport Park at the moment, with the announcement yesterday that Dale Steyn has thrown his lot in with the Titans as he goes all out to regain his place in the national team after his prolonged shoulder injury.

“He and Mark Boucher have a great relationship, it’s one of the advantages of having a guy like him as our coach. It’s a compliment to us that Dale has chosen us to play for and we are privileged to have him,” Titans CEO Jacques Faul told Saturday Citizen.
