Officials may get jail time for contempt of court

eThekwini municipal manager Sibusiso Sithole and the head of the Land Invasions Unit have been ordered to appear in the Durban High Court on Thursday to explain why they shouldn’t be imprisoned for contempt of court.

On Friday, Abahlali baseCato Crest, a branch of a shack-dwellers’ association, and informal settlement residents approached the Durban High Court for the third time to prevent the municipality from illegally destroying their homes. The court granted an interim order compelling the two officials to appear in court to explain why they let illegal evictions continue in contempt of an order obtained on September 2 prohibiting the demolitions.
