MP Makhosi Khoza to be formally charged soon – KZN ANC

The party in the province says it hopes the disciplinary action against the outspoken MP will be handled with sensitively and expeditiously.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday said it would soon charge MP Makhosi Khoza this week or the first week of August for her public statements on the current state of the ruling party and her call for President Jacob Zuma to step down.

“We have mandated and directed the provincial working committee to ensure that she is charged and charges are issued to her within the course of this week, but not later than the end of next week,” ANC provincial spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli told SABC News.

The outspoken MP, who has vowed to vote with her conscience in the upcoming vote of no confidence in the president, has gained much public attention for her utterances as well as threats to her life and daughter for her tough stance.

The KZN ANC has previously said she had “crossed the line and must immediately face the consequences” for her actions following her call for Zuma to resign, saying she found it intolerable being led by a man accused of harassing women during a public event last week on Nelson Mandela Day.

Ntuli said the ANC hoped the disciplinary process against the MP originally from the province would be prompt.

“Issues of discipline in our view are matters that have to be handled with sensitively, but also expeditiously to ensure that you don’t have a cloud hanging over a member of the ANC because of some allegations or counter-allegations,” he said.

However, speaking to The Citizen last week, ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said taking action against Khoza would only feed into her desire to leave the ANC and be made to look like a martyr.

He said the party believed Khoza’s only agenda was to “irritate the ANC to the core”.

“Yes, Makhosi has transgressed every rule and law in the ANC, but we will not take any action that will fulfill her agenda, which is to eventually leave the ANC,” Kodwa said.
