Guptas allegedly paid R1m to Transnet board member involved in tender fraud claims

The official implicated in the scandal recently suffered a heart attack.

In the wake of EFF leader Julius Malema stating he had proof of how the Guptas had won tenders worth millions from state entity Transnet, email evidence has revealed how a board member, Stanley Shane, was allegedly paid R1 million to facilitate contracts for the influential family.

According to the Sunday Times, Shane was the chairman of a Transnet acquisitions committee that handled and signed off on tenders worth R2.5 billion. He was paid R1 million in September last year.

Malema said the Guptas had benefited from contracts worth R17 billion and cited how a tender for locomotives was first priced at R27 million and soared to R42 million at the Guptas’ request, ensuring that they stood to score R10 million out of the deal.

Shane has also been fingered as having close ties to Salim Essa, an associate of the Guptas, and it was revealed he had done work for Transnet through Trillian, a finance company linked to the Guptas.

Shane was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital after suffering a heart attack. He then resigned, writing to Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown. He declined to comment due to his ill-health.
