Why Mugabe is way better than Zuma, according to Vytjie Mentor

The former ANC MP has found herself on the wrong side of her followers for saying there was a positive side to Mugabe's reign.

Former ANC MP and whistleblower Vytjie Mentor has sparked a debate on Facebook on who the better president is between Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and our very own Jacob Zuma.

“Mugabe is way better than Zuma in one aspect only. Yes! He is! He protected Zimbabwe’s sovereignty throughout and under all circumstances,” Mentor wrote.

Political leaders, including some in ruling party ANC, have criticised Zuma for his alliance with the controversial Gupta brothers, who have been accused of offering ministerial positions to Police Minister Fikile Mbalula and former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas, among many others.

Sipho Pityana, ANC stalwart and chairperson of the AngloGold Ashanti board, who has long been calling for Zuma to go, has previously taken on the president for allowing black ownership of the economy to shrink under his watch.

“It is yet another one of Zuma’s dismal failures, and he must stop trying to fool South Africans into thinking he has anything else at heart than his own enrichment and the enrichment of his cronies.

“As was clearly shown in the recent public protector’s report, State of Capture, Zuma not only stands at the centre of the Guptas’ economic empire, he actively facilitates it,” Pityana, convener of the Save South Africa campaign, was quoted as saying.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has always insisted Zuma has been captured by the Gupta family.

“The role of the Guptas goes further than immediately meets the eye.

“Even if they are 11 000 km away, as some have suggested, they’ve still got number one’s number, and he is captured,” Maimane has been quoted as saying.

Though Mentor said she was focusing on only one aspect of the presidencies of the neighbouring countries, some still maintained there was no positive aspect of Mugabe’s reign.

“I don’t think I agree with you this time mngani [friend]. What sovereignty? The people starve, and Zimbabwe is in ruins. He has protected no one except himself and his greed. There is nothing to hand over to the next government of Zimbabwe… it’s a start up project… just like South Africa will be if things [don’t] change quickly,” said one of her followers.

Another said Mugabe was different from Zuma in that he was educated.

“I’m disappointed you’ve made this comparison and have lost credibility in the eyes of many with your odd view of this. Tell me. When Malema and his ilk succeed in messing up this country, where will South Africans run to like Zimbabweans ran here….there will be no where to run too,” one comment read.
