ANCYL: Ramaphosa must name ANC leaders he accused of buying votes

If he fails to perform his duty to report criminal activities, that would amount to a criminal offence, said the league.

Following Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech at the Chris Hani Memorial lecture in Uitenhage, in which he accused some ANC leaders of buying votes ahead of the party’s conference in December, the ANC Youth League has demanded that he come forward with names of the culprits.

In his speech, Ramaphosa said: “Over many years, the unity of the democratic movement has been gradually eroded as the politics of patronage, factionalism, vote buying and gatekeeping has become more widespread.”

He further said money in bags and envelopes had become popular, especially ahead of the conference.

But the youth league, which allegedly does not want Ramaphosa to succeed President Jacob Zuma, has reportedly come out warning the deputy president that if he fails to report criminal activities, that amounted to a criminal offence, reports The Sowetan.

ANCYL eThekwini regional secretary Thinta Cibane said the league regarded Ramaphosa’s allegations as serious and called upon the Hawks to approach the deputy president so he could provide this “critical” information for further investigation and possibly arrest them.

The deputy president’s allegations raise questions about where the money used to buy the votes came from and the league hoped that as a law-abiding citizen, Ramaphosa would help end the corruption.

But Cibane reportedly told the paper that if Ramaphosa made the remarks from a moral point of view, those who were corrupt should not be elected to leadership positions.

Ramaphosa is yet to respond to the league’s call.
