DA councillor nabbed for sexual assault in Cape Town

The man allegedly gave the 13-year-old girl a lift in his car and then took her into his office where he locked the door and assaulted her.

A Western Cape Democratic Alliance councillor has been arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in his party’s office.

The councillor was arrested on Wednesday and will appear in Vredendaal Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Police confirmed the sexual assault and said the alleged attack happened on Sunday morning and was reported to the police station in Clanwilliam on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the case would be investigated by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit.

The ANC in the Western Cape knew about the alleged attack and reacted with “shock and disgust”.

The ANC said the councillor had allegedly given the girl a lift in his car and then took her into his office, locked the door and sexually assaulted her.

ANC spokesperson Sammy Claassen said the alleged offender is a DA councillor currently serving as a proportionate councillor in the Western Cape.

At the time of going to print, the DA had not responded to a request for comment.
