ANC must show ‘remorse’ for its mistakes to win back supporters – Motlanthe

Former president Kgalema Motlanthe on Wednesday night reportedly said the supporters of the African National Congress (ANC), who have lost hope in the party, will continue to vote for the party if it shows remorse over some of the mistakes it has made in the past.

News24 reported on Thursday the ANC veteran said the party’s handling of the Nkandla saga – which concluded in the Constitutional Court handing down a damning judgment against President Jacob Zuma and Parliament – said the ANC had committed several mistakes, but its supporters wanted to see if it had learnt anything from its faults.

“If you own up to the truth and take responsibility, people would be able to identify that,” Motlanthe said.

The former president said what people wanted from the party was simply the truth.

“If you don’t learn from mistakes, then chances are that you will repeat those mistakes and of course the electorate, the nation at large, will only go along with the ANC if indeed it’s convincing in its contrition, not only by words, but in action,” he was quoted as saying.

Motlanthe was speaking to journalists in Houghton, Johannesburg, following his keynote address in honour of three ANC stalwarts: Keorapetse Kgositsile‚ Mongane Wally Serote and Mandla Langa.

The event was to honour the living legends at the John Nkadimeng branch in the suburb.
