Dry conditions expected to persist in WC

Dam levels in the Western Cape dropped to just over 30% of capacity last week.

Moderate to no rain can be expected for the better part of this week, the South African Weather Service said yesterday.

Speaking to The Citizen, forecaster Venetia Phakula said there was a 30% chance of showers and thundershowers at the beginning of this week over Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Free State, North West and KwaZulu-Natal.

“In Gauteng, not much rain can be expected as of Wednesday,” she said.

Phakula said daytime temperatures were expected to remain in the warm category. Pretoria, Johannesburg and Vereeniging were expected to reach highs of 32, 30 and 29ºC respectively today.

“However, indications are there might be a significant drop in temperatures, particularly in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and even KwaZulu-Natal from Friday due to a rigging high pressure system which will bring along cold air,” said Phakula.

Meanwhile dry conditions are expected to persist in the Western Cape. As of February 1, the City of Cape Town implemented level 3B water restrictions, while Beaufort West Municipality upgraded their water restrictions to level 3.

The province’s dam levels last week dropped to just over 30% of capacity.
