Today marks 27 years since the release of former president Nelson Mandela from prison after serving more than 27 years following his arrest on August 5, 1962.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation on Monday will launch the Nelson Mandela Centenary programme to mark 100 years since his birth, it said in a statement on Saturday.

Relive the historical seminal events that led to the release of South Africa’s first democratically elected president from Victor Verster Prison in Cape Town (now Drakenstein Correctional Centre).

10 February 1990: The country’s last apartheid president FW de Klerk announces the release of Mandela from prison after the relaxation of apartheid laws and the unbanning of liberation organisations.

 11 February 1990: Mandela’s historic address at the Cape Town Grand Parade to throngs of supporters.
