Motorist gunned down in KZN

A man was shot dead in his bakkie at the intersection of Kenyon Howden and Montclair roads in Montclair, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday, reports the Southlands Sun.
Police cordoned off the verge where the bakkie had come to a standstill, just past the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
While the motorist had stopped at the robot intersection of Kenyon Howden and Montclair roads, travelling east on Montclair Road, another car pulled up next to him. Two people got out, positioned themselves on either side of the bakkie and opened fire on the man. They were said to have used AK47s. The white Isuzu bakkie was riddled with bullet holes.
The motorist had attempted to pull off before he was shot dead, and his bakkie stopped after striking the gate post of a Montclair Road home, a few hundred metres past the church.
Kenyon Howden Road was closed to traffic on both sides while police processed the evidence. The motive behind the motorist’s murder is unknown at this stage.
A bystander, who asked not to be named, said: “I heard gunshots and when I looked, I saw this white bakkie swerving and driving erratically before it came to a stop along Montclair Road. I didn’t know there was a dead man inside, I thought it was empty. I then heard people on the road screaming ‘he’s been shot’. That’s when I knew…”

A slew of bullet cartridge casings were found across all three lanes at the traffic light.
Later on Wednesday, the gunmen’s getaway vehicle was recovered. It is believed the white Golf 6 had been stolen in Durban North before it was used to transport the criminals to and from the murder scene in Montclair.
The men are said to have crashed the Golf in Dalton Road, Umbilo, where a firearm was recovered with an extended magazine. The occupants of the car allegedly fled into the nearby hostel.
Leeann Amas, who lives down the road from where the shooting took place, said she saw the two vehicles drive past and seconds later, heard gunshots.
“We were so close it felt like the gunshots were going off near us. My husband and I, who were in our car, immediately pulled over,” she said.
