Safe bombed, police officer shot during Benoni garage robbery

A garage was robbed by six men driving in a silver Mercedes-Benz.

A case of business robbery has been opened at the Crystal Park Police Station after a drop safe was bombed at about 2.30am on Tuesday, February 7, reports the Benoni City Times.

The incident occurred at Total Garage on Kingsway Road.

According to Captain Ramothakhi Maqabe, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, it is alleged six men driving in a silver Mercedes-Benz arrived at the garage and hooted for assistance.

“One of the alleged robbers came out of the vehicle carrying a firearm, went inside the store and ordered the teller to open the door,” said Maqabe.

“Once inside, the man went to the office where the drop safe is situated.”

Maqabe said the man then blew up the drop safe.

The officer was taken to hospital.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.

No suspects were arrested.
