Thuli finally takes a breather, heads to Harvard University

For the next year, our former public protector will be based in Harvard University in Boston, US.

Before taking up her position as chairperson of social justice at the Stellenbosch University law faculty, Madonsela will complete a one-year fellowship with one of the world’s best tertiary institutions.

Madonsela arrived in the US on Thursday and will focus on social justice, reducing poverty and equality while fostering social cohesion. She told Sunday Times she was excited to be among bright minds who had achieved a lot in their respective careers.

“South Africans must know we are highly regarded and seen as a beacon of hope in achieving peaceful coexistence for groups of diverse ethnic origin and colour. For us, we know we are not there yet, but we are getting there,” said Madonsela.

Having turned down an opportunity to teach at another world-renowned university, Oxford, in England, Madonsela explained she wanted to take a bit of a breather, and going from her 7-year tenure as public protector to teaching would be taxing on her. She opted instead to lecture at various universities in the US while completing her fellowship.

Upon her return in 2018, she is set to launch a social justice centre at Stellenbosch University.
